BRICS Perspective on the Stability Challenges of Perovskite Technologies

We are pleased to announce the publication of a new perspective article in RSC Energy Advances, entitled “Perovskites beyond efficiency: stability challenges from space to Earth”.

Authored by researchers from Brazil (André F. V. Fonseca and Prof. Ana Flávia Nogueira), Russia (Lyubov A. Frolova and Pavel A. Troshin), and China (Jianyu Yuan), the article highlights the importance of international collaboration in addressing one of the greatest challenges facing metal halide perovskite (MHP) technologies: their long-term operational stability.

Although perovskite materials have achieved remarkable power conversion efficiencies and exhibit impressive resistance to extreme radiation environments—making them promising candidates for space applications—their durability under everyday terrestrial conditions, particularly in the presence of moisture, oxygen, and thermal cycling, remains a major scientific and technological challenge.

The perspective highlights recent advances aimed at improving perovskite stability, including low-dimensional interface engineering, quantum dot integration, defect passivation strategies, and in situ synchrotron characterization techniques. The authors also emphasize the importance of understanding degradation mechanisms to guide the rational design of more robust photovoltaic and optoelectronic devices.

Developed within the framework of a BRICS international collaborative initiative, the work reinforces the importance of global scientific partnerships in accelerating the transition of perovskite technologies from laboratory-scale demonstrations to reliable, scalable, and commercially viable applications.
